Principal’s Report
It was a pleasure to accompany Year 6 student Makayla to represent the school at the Kingborough Council last week. Teachers have continued to use the 1967 Black Tuesday Bushfires as a significant local historic event and have developed creative learning tasks around this theme. Please read Makayla’s report later in the newsletter and come to the office foyer to see Year 5 mixed media artworks and poetry that accompany the book.
This Thursday is a student free day with teachers moderating student work with seven other local schools. Moderation is an important process, allowing teachers to develop appropriate, reliable and consistent rating and assessments of student learning. This year we will be looking at above standard evidence for Writing and Number and looking at work portfolios to see where students are in relation to the Australian Curriculum ratings.
As many of you know Mrs Sue Hastie has been working with us as a support teacher this term. She has decided to finish her contract and work in more of a consultancy role across several department schools. We wish her all the very best and know that many teachers and students will benefit from her expertise and skill.
I wish those families that celebrate Easter a wonderfully chocolatey time, and for all our families, a safe and restful holiday. Students resume on Monday 1st May.

Kath’s Spot
I am writing this week from sunny Yulara, Northern Territory, where my son Ben, aged 13, and I have travelled to do some work as part of a base camp team with the Mutijulu Community near Uluru. We will also host busloads of young people from each capital city who are travelling to Yulara for the weekend to learn more about the culture and community.
On Sunday afternoon we had the pleasure of going out bush with three of our dear friends Rene, Judy and Millie, who are indigenous elders in the Mutijulu community. They taught us how to hunt for witchetty grubs, and cook them, kangaroo tail and yam (sweet potato). I even braved trying the grubs both raw and uncooked. While we have ventured around with these ladies I have been very fortunate to hear many amazing stories. I will have the opportunity to share some of our experiences in each class during NAIDOC week.
It got me thinking, sometimes some things may seem a little scary, or may bring apprehension or anxieties, but if I didn't have the courage to have a go I may have missed the moment that I was fortunate to experience. And, although witchetty grubs brought a fleeting thought of 'do I really want to eat this?', I'm glad I had the opportunity to. I'm glad I was open to enjoying the moment, and in hindsight, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. What things have you been hesitant about trying? What might be holding you back? Go on, have a go. I will look forward to hearing of your adventures! See you next week!
Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Year 5A
Term 1 has been a very busy one for 5A! We’ve been:
- Learning about narrative and persuasive writing in English
- Learning about animal adaptation in Science
- Finding out about the impact of bushfires on environment and communities and how people can respond in HASS
- And we have also been working on a measurement unit in Mathematics. As a part of this unit we created castles where we had to measure with precision and find the perimeter and area of rectangles.

The Year 5A Cleaning Squad recently cleaned the Garden shed. They are very proud to show their clean working space in these before and after photos.

School Photos
School Photo Day is Wednesday 3rd May (first week of Term 2). A reminder to return envelopes to class teachers as soon as possible. Family/Sibling order envelopes are available from (and must be returned back to) the office.
Cross Country
As a part of our Health and Physical Education program all students will be participating in our annual Cross Country Carnival on Thursday 4th May (first week of Term 2). This will be held on the school oval.
Runners are encouraged to wear appropriate running shoes, T-shirt in house colours and shorts. A coat or jacket may be necessary while watching other races. Students will need a complete change of clothes and a plastic bag in case of bad weather or muddy clothes. Plenty of water to drink is essential and, if your child has asthma, please ensure they have their necessary medication.
If we do experience poor weather conditions the carnival will still continue. Grades will come out one at a time to run their race and then go straight back to their warm classrooms.
This is part of our physical education program and participation is compulsory. If your child is unable to participate in the run, there is a 1km non-competitive walk. Please provide a signed note if you wish for your child to participate in the 1km walk instead of the cross country run.
Approximate starting times (weather dependent) and distances (Grade 3-6 in line with HCSSA distances) are as follows:
10.30am – 10.50am - Early Recess
11.00am - Grade 6 - 3km
11.10am - Grade 5 - 3km
11.20am – Walkers - 1km
11.25am – Prep - 850m
11.35am - Grade 1 - 1.2km
11.45am - Grade 2 - 1.2km
11.55am - Grade 3 - 2.4km
12.05pm - Grade 4 - 2.4km
Boys and girls will be run separately.
Students are expected to remain seated in their house groups for the duration of the carnival and parents/carers are more than welcome to visit their child.
Grade 3-6 place getters will be invited to represent Snug Primary School at the HCSSA Cross Country Carnival to be held on Wednesday the 24th May. A confirmation and information notice will be sent home to successful runners.
We hope to see you there, cheering our runners along. There will be some seating available but please feel free to bring along your own camp chairs and/or picnic rug.

“Flames of Fear”
On the 29th March of March, Mrs Jeffrey and I drove to Civic Centre to represent Snug Primary School and receive a book called “Flames of Fear” written by a local author Roger McNiece. He spent 7 years researching Tasmanian bushfire history and stories of survival. At the presentation, one lady shared a story about her father. He was the principal at Kingston Primary at the time of the 1967 fires. When the fires hit Kingborough, he quickly grabbed a net and a skipping rope. He laid the net out on the ground and got the older kids to hold onto the net. The littler kids held the big kids’ hands. He led 150 students down to the beach. They were only able to see two feet in front of them because of the smoke. On that day he was a life saver. After the presentation we had lunch and talked to the Mayor. He said everything was affected or even destroyed and that you could not see a lot of things. Our “Flames of Fear” book will be used as a secondary source of information in history and it will be great in the library for our students to learn about those terrible events. By Makayla A.
Chess
Benny, Finn and Teo competed in the chess tournament last week. They had a challenging day with some fantastic wins. Well done boys.
