Principal’s Report
Every day a student does not attend school can have a negative impact on their learning.
Developing the habit of going to school every day is vital so children do not miss out on important ideas and skills they need for future learning.
Did you know:
- missing half a day of school each week equates to one month of missed learning each year
- the attendance habits set by children when they first start school continue throughout their school life
- if children miss half a day of school each week between Pre-primary and Year 10, they would miss almost one full year of learning
- learning is cumulative – if children miss a day, it is harder for them to catch up.
In Assembly today we have talked about attendance and celebrated the fact that 75 out of 355 students attending our school have 100% attendance since school has started. What a major achievement!
We are happy to see a decline in playground incidents since the introduction of Snug CARES rewards and students are reporting feeling happier, safer and more supported during playtimes. Today we have had the excitement and pleasure of finding out who the winners are of The Snug CARES rewards for Term 1. Hartz students will be accompanying teachers to the Hobart Aquatic Centre and Dru Point for lunch next Thursday. A show of hands in Assembly today demonstrated that more students are displaying positive behaviour in the playground.
Please note that Term 1 ends on Thursday 11th April (Friday 12th April is a Student Free Day as our staff will be doing Moderation). Term 2 starts on Monday 29th April, we look forward to seeing you all again then. Have a safe and happy holiday break!

Kath’s Spot
As I write this I sit in the heat of the day in Northern Territory, while waving the flies away and hearing the chatter of those around me.
For the past week and the two weeks to come, out family is part of a team based in Yulara, near Uluru, and working with the local Anangu people. We have been travelling each day from Yulara to the Mutijulu Community to work alongside the Night Patrol crew who care for the younger members of the community. We help to support the crew who primarily are putting in place great lifestyle choices to set up each student to make it possible for them to attend school each day.
As I interact with the local Indigenous community I am conscious of learning to listen more and more each day. Have you ever thought you have heard what someone has said, only to discover what you heard was completely different to what they said? It’s a bit like when someone says to you “red is a nice colour” and you might go away thinking their favourite colour is red.
I encourage you to use clarification skills, maybe asking “so just checking, did you say that made you feel frustrated?”, because sometimes this gives them the opportunity to give you more information, and to actually clear up what they were trying to communicate. This will help your relationships too. I know when someone has really heard what is going on in my world instead of feeling frustrated, I feel calm, at ease and I feel that I have been truly heard. I wonder for you how you have felt when someone isn’t listening to what you are saying. Is this feeling different from when they have heard you?
Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Year 4-5C
In 4-5C we have been learning about Dreamtime stories. First we went to the Outdoor Learning Area and heard the story of how the whales created the land around Snug. We heard and read more Dreamtime stories and acted them out in groups. Together as a class we wrote the story of how Sleeping Beauty came to lay in the Huon Valley. The best part has been writing our own Dreamtime stories! We are now up to revising and publishing our stories. By Emily Wright.

Message from our Crossing Guard, Simon
- Parents and children to cross at the crossing. Many people are crossing over from school to the post office. This is a high-density traffic area and quite dangerous.
- Please hold younger children’s hands when crossing the road. On occasion little people have run back to the footpath and across the road, or fallen over.
- Please ensure children walk inside the school fenced zone. Many parents and students are walking across the turning circle driveways which is a high flow traffic area mornings and afternoons.
- Please be mindful of the Beach Road intersection. All corners of this intersection are a high flow traffic area and it is often difficult to negotiate. There have been a number of near misses on this intersection.
- There is NO PARKING on yellow lines on the highway. Buses and cars turning left and right onto the highway have lower visibility when cars are parked over the yellow lines.
