Principal's Report

Dear Families,

A fantastic day was enjoyed by all on Wednesday as we held our Athletics Carnival. The showers held off enough for our students to run all their scheduled races and there were many outstanding personal achievements. A big thank you to Mrs Jac Parker for organising the day, to our EFA team for preparing the grounds and all the parent volunteers and helpers on the day. I look forward to seeing the photos – especially of the school chicken enjoying the day!

Today staff were involved in our final professional learning day for the year. First aid training, introduction to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), and more work with developing our teaching pedagogical skills were the focus areas for the day.

On Wednesday we received the School Satisfaction Survey results from earlier in the year from staff, student and parent feedback. Some highlights of the data were:

  • 100% of parents agreed or strongly agreed that the school is well maintained, that teachers expect students to do their best, that behaviour is well managed and the school is well organised.
  • 95% of students surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that their teachers expect them to do their best and over 98% of student responses indicated they felt safe at school.
  • Staff satisfaction results were in the 90-100% area against the statements the school looks for ways to improve, staff are encouraged to pursue professional development and the school takes staff opinions seriously.

Areas for growth in the school will be to continue to look at ways to involve parents and students in decision making, ensuring every student is able to report feeling safe at school, and continuing to provide interesting and engaging learning opportunities. I will be sharing the full survey results at School Association next month.

If you are intending for your child to leave Snug Primary in 2017 (not Grade 6) can you please inform the school office by Friday October 28th? This helps us with planning for classes and I thank those families that have already informed us of changes.

Class in Focus – Grade 1A Maguire

Degas's dancers' art with Grade 1A.

Edgar Degas, the artist, used ballerinas as some of his subjects for his works. He liked to capture them while they were rehearsing. Their ballet tutus were painted to look very light and delicate.

In class, we danced some ballet moves for a while first. Our teacher modelled some ideas for drawing ballet dancers practising some poses. We used grey leads, zooms, skin colour pastels, and we used chalk to colour the tutus.

Take it Home Project

Last term 3 grade six students, Ryan, Kiko and Amelie and 2 teachers, Mrs Hastie and Mrs O went to the town hall in Hobart for the Take It Home project launch.

The Take It Home project is a kit that helps students learn about saving electricity and how to reduce the amount of electricity that is used at home and at school. Mrs O and Mrs Nel Smit developed trialled and revised the school program for the kit.

We got to meet the Mayor of Hobart, who is called Sue Hickey. She gave us a private tour of the town hall. We saw her office. She thinks that her office is better than Malcolm Turnbull's office!

We saw the old underground jail cells which were made by prisoners and we also saw the ball room.

Students in grade six are using the Take it Home project to help reduce the schools electricity costs.
