Principal's Report

Bonnie Jeffrey
Principal

We wish our Cross Country Team all the very best for their interschool event next Wednesday. A big thank you to Lorna Barrett our parent official for this day. If you are available for this event or any other parent volunteer role, please let our administration team know. There is further information in this newsletter regarding the Working With Vulnerable People registration which is mandatory from 1st September 2016.

We were so proud of our Grade 3 and 5 students last week as the completed NAPLAN testing. They should be commended for their positive attitude and willingness to show what they had learnt during the tests. These tests give us great information for planning school improvement pathways.

We are currently accepting Kinder enrolments for 2017 from families within our school area. If you have a child born in 2011, please contact the school for an enrolment pack as our first class is almost full already. We can't wait to meet our new little learners.

Next week we welcome Mrs Shannon Milne and Mrs Erminia Sorella who will be taking Grade 5 and Italian classes respectively while Mrs Bernadette Brinkhoff takes leave from Snug to pursue some Professional Learning opportunities and experiences in another school. We wish her all the best for the reminder of the year.

Finally I'd like to finish with a statement from one of our Grade 6 students describing our school: "Snug Primary School is a very safe place where everyone is accepted into our community with open arms. Our values make our school better for learning because we accept everybody for who they are, are safe and everyone works together in a team to achieve personal excellence" - Zavia

Kath's Spot

Last week was National Chaplaincy week- yay!! It's an opportunity for me to be able to share what I do in the school, and for the community to be able to celebrate some of this.

I got to thinking what do I love most about my job? I really love starting my day with being able to welcome students and their families to school of a morning, while I do bus duty. I love it when a student will jump off the bus and come running to me to show me something special to them, or to give me a big warm hug. I love that I can go from class to class and drop in and say 'hi'. Sometimes I will sit and chat with students, I enjoy hearing about their day, I listen to them read, or help with their work. Other times I sit and hear about anxieties or family breakdowns, and sometimes I hear about the moments when students feel frustrated and alone.

I am fortunate to be able to help the students with organising their costumes for school plays. It's not always me that creates it, although sometimes I do, but I get to see the joy on their faces when they hop on stage and feel proud of themselves as whatever character they are. I have the opportunity to capture that moment on camera.

I get to do a little happy dance when another of my grant applications gets approved, I'm happy that our school will have the opportunity to 'better something' with these extra funds. I love the opportunities they create, and that our students and the community will have a small win because of the efforts that I put into applying.

I love that as I walk past anyone I have the opportunity to call them by name, to see their eyes light up, and to briefly make them smile. I love that I can give a cuddle to the newborn sibling, to give the overtired mum a hug, and to help a child learn to play with another. I love being able to meet with parents, and hear their world, and see how I can make a difference. I smile knowing some families have food on their table because I organised a food hamper to help through those financially difficult times.

I get to go to work to a place I love, and do work that brings me Joy! For that I thank you all. What brings you Joy?

Blessings to you all

Class in Focus

Grade 4A Mrs Ozkilinc

Tayla - "Last Friday Mr Kennedy-Tyson came into Grade 4A and brought some historical artifacts from ships. He explained what they were used for. An interesting artifact was the pulley which was used for the sail ropes. If one of these dropped from high up it would kill you. The hour glass told the sailors when their shift had finished and when to go to bed. On one of the ships there were 6 cannons and around 100 cannonballs".

  • Angus – "It took 4 people to steer the ship".
  • Shelley – "The most important people on the ship were the carpenter - to make repairs, the sailmaker - to repair sails and beds and the rope maker to repair the rigging".
  • Lukah – "There was an artist on board to draw animals and plants to record new discoveries".
  • Maddie – "The punishment for sailors was to sit on top of the masts, sometimes for days".
  • Matilda – "The scientist on board was important. The telescope was used to spot white capped waves which told them there was land close by".
  • Bridie – "The toilets were at the front of the boat near the carved head. The wind would be blowing from the back of the boat so the toilets were at the front so the smell didn't get blown back onto the crew".
  • Millie – "There was copper on the bottom of the boat so the Marine Worms couldn't eat through the wood".
  • Archie – "They measured the depth of the water by using a rope with knots. There was a fathom between each knot which was about 1.8 meters. The rope had fat on the end of it and if it came up with sand on the end they knew that the bottom was sand. If it came up clean it was rocks".

Jack and the Beanstalk

Tickets are now available at the office for "Jack and the Beanstalk" being presented by Grade 2A and Grade 2B on Wednesday 25th May at 11.00am and 6.30pm. Please note tickets are not sold on the day of the play as the seating arrangements are finalised on Tuesday evening.

Registration to Work with Vulnerable People

If you volunteer at Snug Primary School, you will be required to register for "Registration to Work with Vulnerable People". This will be mandatory by 1 September 2016. Please see attached for further information and instructions on how to apply.

RBF Awards – nominate now!

The RBF Awards nominations period has opened and nominations for exceptional staff and volunteers from across the Department are being accepted. Recognising excellence is important, not only in rewarding people for their outstanding work, but also because it provides an opportunity to share information and inspirational insights, ultimately leading to improved learning outcomes for our students.

"Part Way is OK"

'Part Way is OK' is a walking plan that encourages more students to safely walk part of the way to school.

It's an ideal way to reduce traffic around the school gate and enable children to have a short walk before school.

Schools and their local councils work together to find safe drop off points a short distance from school, where parents are encouraged to drop their children. These places are clearly sign posted, and the school communicates the drop off plan clearly to all families.

Children then walk part of the way to school using the designated route, when and how the school decides.

A simple five-step guide to running 'Part Way is OK' that suits the needs of individual schools and local communities is available for Move Well Eat Well Member schools.

Kinder 2017

If your child will be ready for Kinder in 2017 (turning 4 in 2016) please pop into the school office and register his/her name, pick up an enrolment package and start the enrolment process. It helps us immensely in our planning for how Kinder will operate in 2017.

Kitchen News

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program – can you help?

Hello Parents/Carers

Here at Snug Primary we are privileged enough to have the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.

Dearne Coad, the Kitchen manager and Dave Groves, the Garden manager, work hard to provide the best experiences which teach new skills to the students.

Although we have teachers, teacher assistants and other helpers that are willing to join in and support the groups, we can't keep the program up and running successfully without our valuable volunteers. Parents and community members attend Kitchen and/or Garden sessions held every week for each class from Grades 3-6. We understand that not all parents can assist, but are you someone with time to spare and an interest in doing something new?

Not only does the program provide opportunities for the students, the volunteers also learn lots of new things.

In the kitchen you can gain tasty recipes and tips about different cutting techniques. Also everyone in the cooking session gets to taste not only the food that their group makes, but all the different dishes that each group in the class has made too.

In the garden you can learn about what vegetables grow well next to each other and what time of year is important to plant them. You might even be motivated to plant your own vegetable garden.

So join us for 1 hour of your time in a week to learn new skills and build positive relationships within our community.

Kind regards
Kirsten – 6B on behalf of Snug Primary.

Fresh Produce?

Very unfortunately the wallabies have devastated our vegetable gardens over the holidays. Any fresh produce donations would be greatly appreciated! Please bring to Dearne in the kitchen or leave at the office.
