Principal’s Report

Hi Friends and Families,

2023 Staffing and Classes

We are in the process of working out staffing and classes for next year. It’s always a big job, and we do our very best to ensure that students are with friends, and in environments, that are best for them!

Remembrance Day Assembly

We had a poignant and thoughtful Remembrance Day assembly today, led by our Year 6 students. The students, in remembering and recognising the sacrifice of Australians in conflicts, were incredibly respectful. We should be very proud of the young people at our school.

Year 6 Transitions

Some of our Year 6 transitions have already started. We want to support our Year 6 students as best we can to make the move into high school next year, so we work closely with local schools with visits and supports to ensure the move is as smooth as possible.

Trivia Night

We had a brilliant Trivia Night recently, and raised a significant sum for our school. It was lots of fun and great to see our community come together. A big thanks to Dearne and Brett for all of their hard work in making it happen.

Tiers Road Gate

We have had a couple of close calls with cars driving down behind the gym, either to drop students off to OSHC, or to school. We ask that parents don’t drive past the top gate, so please park up the top and walk down if you want to come in to the school on this side. We want everyone to be safe! Further to this, the gate will be locked at 8.30am and unlocked again at 3.30pm.

Snug Jingles

Only a few weeks to go until everyone’s annual favourite event! Please lock in the date for this on Sunday 4 December, 4.30pm-7.00pm.

Kind Regards,

Blair Curtis
Principal

Kath’s Spot

What is it I wonder that helps you to regulate how you are feeling? When anger, frustration, or disappointment rises, what do you do? Do you walk away, do you talk it out, or are you still trying to work out what works best for you?

I remember when my boys were little I was forever saying “use your words” trying to get them to explain what was going on for them, that was making them feel that way, so we could help with the situation. And there were other times I knew it was best just to say to them “go do 100 bounces on the trampoline”, because I knew they just needed to bounce out all that frustration.

This week the students have been working to find strategies that work for them to help regulate their emotions. It is so important to work out what works best for them, because these strategies will help them going into adult life.

Maybe helping to share with your little people what works best for you, might help them to see we all have moments when we need to regulate our feelings, and finding strategies can be an asset in building healthy relationships.

Many Blessings

Class in Focus – 2A

Developing our Curiosity

In 2A, we are learning about the continents of the world and finding out what is special about each one. We are curious to find out more and will hopefully travel to some of our favourite places one day.

Where in the world are you curious to visit and why?

Rosa: I would like to visit the Philippine Islands because I like swimming.
Toby B: I would like to visit Africa. I would like to see the Sahara Desert and see where the oases are.
Toby D: I would like to see the African savanna and see the animals that live there.
Mason: I would like to visit Asia. I would like to walk in the wild and see the nature there.
Sam: I am curious to visit everywhere in the world on a cruise ship.
Zoey: I am curious to visit Africa. I want to see the leopards.
Lucy: I am curios to visit New York because I’d love to see the tall buildings and all the flashing lights. I would like to see the Statue of Liberty and walk all the way up to the top.
Erika: I want to visit Asia. I would especially like to visit the Dead See to see how low the sea level is at the lowest point on the earth.
Max: I would like to visit Africa to see the lions in the savanna.
Isla: I am curious to visit Italy to taste all their yummy pasta and other food.
Elyssa: I would like to visit Canberra because I’d like to visit family members there.
Samuel: I’d like to go to Peru in South America because I’d like to see my Dad’s mine.
Savannah: I’d like to go to Magnetic Island which is an island off the coast of Australia. I’d like to see the koalas there.
Charlie: I would like see the Dead Sea, which is in Asia. I want to see how low the land is there. I’d like to float on the very salty water.
Jacob: I would like to visit South America and see the Amazon rainforest. I’d to see the animals there, like sloths and snakes.
Henry: I don’t know where to choose because I am curious about the whole world!
William: I want to visit the African savanna. I would like to see wildlife detecting its own prey.
Felix: I would like to visit Lithuania, because I haven’t been there, and I also have some relations there. I’d like to visit some castles and also see the Hill of Crosses.
Mahli: I would like to go to Perth because my Nan lives there. There is also a great waterpark with big slides that I would like to go to.
Reuben: I want to go to Europe to learn some of the languages that people speak there.
Lily: I would like to go to Asia because there are heaps of animals that I like there. I’d especially like to see the pandas in China.

Snug Reps at State Athletics

Oscar and Matilda did a great job representing the Huon and Channel team at the State Athletics in Launceston last Wednesday.

Book Club

Book Club orders are submitted and paid for online via the Book Clubs Loop. Please go to the link below. It’s a very straightforward process to sign up and then super quick and easy to place orders. The Loop for the current book issue will be closed off on Friday 25th November so ensure you have your orders in by then. Books will arrive to school and be distributed to students a few weeks later.

NAPLAN 2023

Students will be sitting NAPLAN between 15 and 27 March 2023.

The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.

NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance; however, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.

This is the first year NAPLAN will be held in March, having previously taken place in May. This change was made so school systems would have access to results earlier in the school year, so they can be used to inform teaching and learning plans for the remainder of the year.

Why NAPLAN is conducted online

NAPLAN online provides a better assessment and more precise results.

One of the main benefits of NAPLAN online is that it uses tailored (or adaptive) testing. This means that students receive questions better suited to their abilities, so they can show what they know and can do.

Online testing also allows us to provide a wide range of accessibility options to support students with disability to access NAPLAN.

Feedback from students is that they find the online test more engaging.

Please note that students in Year 3 complete the Writing Test on paper.
