Principal’s Report
Hi Parents, Families and Community,
It’s hard to believe we are already six weeks through term 1! Things certainly feel like they are moving through at a great rate.
Teaching and Learning
Our teachers have already started to dig into our professional learning focus for this year – in particular, formative assessment, and how our teachers use student data to inform their teaching to cater for the range of needs in their classes.
Meet the Teachers
Just a reminder, that all of our classroom teachers will have contacted you re online Meet the Teacher sessions online next week. If you are interested in participating, but haven’t yet done so, contact the classroom teacher, and they can add you. Its an opportunity to chat about the class, and the programs that will be running for your child this year. If you would like a more personal discussion about your child, please contact the teacher and make a time.
Primary Progress Reports
Primary Progress Reports will be sent home next week. This tick-a-box report related to student capabilities will give you a snapshot about how your child is settling in to the classroom in 2022. Subject specific grades, with a new, nine-point scale, will go home at the end of term 2.
Changes to reporting in 2022
This year, you will notice some changes to reporting in Tasmanian Government Schools.
Firstly, you won’t see A-E reporting any more for Prep to Year 10 students.
Most families in Tasmanian Government Schools have told us that A-E reporting isn’t meaningful enough for them. So, the Department is introducing a new 9-point visual scale.
Along with the visual scale a worded description will be included to help you understand how your child is going against the expected standard for their year level. The 9-point scale will show more specifically where your child is at with their learning. This change won’t apply to students in Years 11 and 12.
The second main change you’ll see is that teachers will be communicating with you more regularly throughout the year, instead of providing written comments on reports.
This more regular communication might be through online communication, telephone calls, or face-to-face conversations.
By having more regular information about your child’s learning progress you’ll get a better understanding of how your child is going across the entire school year (not just twice a year).
What you should expect across the school year:
Term 1 |
Week 5-8 |
Communication focussing on application to learning Or conversation about learning plan goals with families and students |
Term 2 |
Week 6-9 |
Opportunity for a two or three-way conversation focussing on learning progress, application to learning and wellbeing and/or learning plan goals. |
Term 2 |
Week 10 |
Mid-year report of learning achievement |
Term 3 |
Weeks 6-9 |
Opportunity for a two or three-way conversation focussing on learning progress, application to learning and wellbeing and/or learning plan goals. |
Term 4 |
Week 9-10 |
End of year report of learning achievement |
Families will be supported to understand the new reporting requirements and the changes to mid and end of year report as they are implemented.

Kath’s Spot
When you come up against challenges I wonder what your instant “go to is?”. Is it to divert, or maybe procrastinate hoping that time will tick over or the task might somehow go away. Or do you get in straight away and do it straight away? Or does it depend on the task I wonder?
I think for me sometimes I really have to encourage myself under my breath “okay Kath, you’ve got this, let’s just get in and get in over and done with straight away, otherwise it might take even longer”. Does this sound familiar?
Here at Snug Primary we have been talking with our students about the fact that we know that challenging work helps your brain grow. Did you know that? It literally helps new pathways to develop, and in turn grows your brain! And don’t we all want that to happen? Do even though sometimes our children and students may feel like challenging work can be a struggle, it is a struggle worth pushing through, because they will learn and grow from the experience. And when that happens everyone is happy!!!! So lets all encourage each other to have a go, and to push through, even just one more step further than what we have tried before. Because we only fail, if we fail to try!
Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Year 6B
Staff Student Basketball
On Wednesday the 9th of March the stage was set and as the bell rang for lunchtime the basketball court was flooded with enthusiasm as the crowds surrounded the court to watch the Year 6 students take on a team of staff members in a game of Basketball. During the term so far, students have been learning skills in Physical Education about basketball and how to control the ball and knowing the rules of the game.
While everyone surrounded the court and supported with cheers and applause, the staff worked hard to steal the ball off the Year 6 students and push it down their end of the court. There was even a few 3-pointer shots put in the hoop, before the Year 6’s got stuck in and stole the ball back and took off down their end to take some more shots at their hoop. Unfortunately the end score showed that on this particular day the staff were too strong for the students, however the determination and persistence by all the Year 6 students on the day was wonderful to see, Here’s to many more challenging future games!
