Principal’s Report

Hi Parents, Families and Community,

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable holiday (if you managed too) and enjoyed time with family. It was certainly icy in the first week, but lovely to enjoy some winter blue sky days.

Coronavirus

As you are all aware, there is an ongoing spike in the coronavirus on the mainland, affecting interstate travel, and involving quarantine of travellers from some states back in Tasmania. We are regularly posting any updates about the changing situation on Facebook, so please keep checking the school pages regularly during this time. It’s also important that we continue to be mindful of social distancing, and how we interact with each other when on the school grounds.

Covid check in

All visitors to the school WHO ENTER a building (office, classroom) are required to check in using the Tas check in app. If you do not have a phone, please come in to the office and check in manually.

Winter Feast Date Amendment

Our School association will be running a Winter Feast on Friday, August 27, from 5pm to 8pm at the school (the date was originally August 6). This is a chance to grab some delicious hot food, mulled wine, hot drinks and share in a fun community event. We will be looking for volunteers to help out too.

Kind Regards,

Blair Curtis
Principal

Kath’s Spot

Welcome Back to Term 3!! It seems hard to believe that already half a year is gone and before too long we will be saying goodbye to winter and bringing on daylight savings again.

I know that the start of term, can also mean some students find it hard to get back into the routine of going to school; their anxiety might be rising and often we see and hear of a lot more ‘sore tummies’ at the moment. Please rest assured this is normal, but we also want to encourage you all to push through the hard times and yell out if you need any support. Giving them the day off, actually generally only increases the anxiety for future experiences.

In the Cool Kids program that the University offers, they help to teach the young people how to be a ‘Detective Thinker’. This helps the young people to break down questions about their anxiety like, “how many times may that really have ever happened?” When you think about it, giving children the day off school because they are feeling anxious, actually reinforces to the child that ‘yes, we agree - there is something there that you should be anxious about’. We know how hard it is for parents to see your child, who is feeling anxious, walk away at school with them feeling sad, but please rest assured that we are all looking out for them! We will be looking after your precious children till you see them again and will be encouraging them to push through one step at a time, challenging themselves to go one step further than they thought they were capable of. Sometimes it can be easier just to give them a hug or the like and then head off allowing a teacher, teacher’s aide, senior staff or myself to care for your child from there. Lingering can often cause more anxiety and increase the levels of stress for them when you go to leave.

Your children are amazing little people and we are here to help them along their journey. Please let us know if we can help them or you in any way especially as they settle back into this new term with new routines and timetables.

Many Blessings

Class In Focus – 2A

2A are enjoying Outdoor Learning

In 2A, many of our recent learning experiences have taken place outdoors. We have used our own bush classroom and river area for exploration and inspiration for writing, as well as for NAIDOC activities. As part of our Science enquiry, we have left our school grounds and followed the course of the Snug River until it meets Snug Bay. We have also been looking at transpiration as part of the water cycle, conducting our experiments in the trees around our school.

Outdoor learning offers many benefits for children. These include:

  • greater understanding of the natural world
  • the development of independence, resilience, teamwork and leadership
  • managing personal risks
  • learning the value of outdoor recreation for health, enjoyment and well-being
  • experiencing safety in nature
  • the development of an adventurous spirit
