Principal’s Report

Hi Parents and Caregivers,

It’s hard to believe, but we are nearly halfway through the year! Our teachers and students have been working hard and I am sure everyone will be thankful for our two-week break at the end of next week.

Reports/Parent Teacher Interviews

Reports will go home with students today. Please be sure to check school bags! Parent teacher interviews are being held next week and will give you an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress. If you would like an opportunity to have a meeting with your child’s teacher(s) and haven’t already arranged a time, please contact them directly to arrange.

NAIDOC

It has been fantastic to share learning with students for our NAIDOC focus in the past fortnight. Students have explored Tasmanian’s indigenous history, the food, dance and animals that were such an important part of their lives on our island.

Fire Ed

Alison from the Tasmania Fire Service has also been in our school this week, educating our students on fire safety. A big thanks for her time and positive contribution in helping keep our students, and their families, safe!

Hockey

Our busy fortnight has also included opportunities for students to learn hockey. Thanks to Mick from Hockey Tasmania for his time and energy in working with our students.

Linda Jolleys – A Sad Farewell

I wanted to take the time to share with the community news of the retirement of Linda Jolleys, our AST (senior teacher) and Skills Teacher. Linda has been at the school for about five years, but has a deep and rich history of education in Tasmania for much of her working life. Linda is an incredibly knowledgeable and skilled practitioner, and has done exceptional work in the classroom, and as a school leader. Most recently, Linda develop and shaped our “Skills” program, essentially a STEM approach that also focuses on developing the broader general capabilities of our students. I know I speak for all of our community when I say we are grateful for her amazing contribution here, and we wish her well in retirement. Linda’s replacement process is underway, and we will let the community know who will take on the role once we have confirmation.

Kind Regards,

Blair Curtis

Kath’s Spot

This week, we finished our fifth and final week of our Parenting Matters Course that we have been running at Snug Primary, and what a delight it was to sit and chat with all the parents and try to nutter out this parenting gig together. It was interesting to see that it continued to come up that, as parents we need to keep celebrating the successes we have (too often it can seem like such a hard slog) and also the successes and achievements our children have. Whether that’s when they have finally put their clothes in the clothes basket or packed their own lunch box, we want to celebrate with them these ages and stages.

When they are initially beginning a new habit, it especially may help to break down each step and celebrate success in each step. Having them be able to complete making dinner for the family, in turn will be a Win-Win for everyone in the long run! Ask them to help choose what the celebration or reward may be, and then they will be more invested in working towards success. It's the effort too that we want to praise, not necessarily just the end result. Too often, we can be so focused on the ‘ticked box at the end’ (I’m guilty of this, I know) that sometimes it can be easy to forget to praise, encourage and celebrate the steps that got them to that finish point.

We know we all like to celebrate when we have achieved our best so lets work hard at helping to celebrate with our children along the way. I often say to parents, at the start celebrate often and then you can widen the gap if you need to… but the kids won’t mind extra encouragement, an extra pat on the back, seeing the delight on your face, or even being able to spend an extra minute or two with you doing something special. And you know what….tomorrow, next week or in years to come - I don’t think you will mind either.

Many Blessings

Fire Safety

EARLY CHILDHOOD

TFS receives regular requests from preschools and child care centres asking for firefighters to visit and teach children about home fire safety.

TFS does not deliver structured fire safety programs to children below primary school age. This decision was made based on research carried out by the Mental Health Services of the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Melbourne. This research indicated that:

  • Children under the age of five had low retention of the information they had learned; and
  • In some children, the information had actually stimulated their curiosity about fire and they had begun to play with fire.

TFS believes that parents and caregivers are the best people to make sure that very young children are safe from fire. To help with this, TFS has a fire safety website for parents, carers and teachers.

TFS has also developed free giveaways for young children that introduce them to the friendly firefighter characters that they will meet when they receive the School Fire Education Program including a colouring book, a money box shaped like a fire truck, and stickers with home fire safety messages for the whole family.
