Principal’s Report

Dear families,

It seems unbelievable that we are already at the end of week 3 of the term. Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun.

Congratulations to all involved in Wednesday’s sport carnival. Snug CARES values were displayed by all students who showed great resilience and sportsmanship. Thank you to our wonderful community who had no hesitation in ‘pitching in’ and helping out where needed. Your support is so very much appreciated.

We are very proud to recognise the achievement of Ella Lindsay who is one of our fabulous Year 3 students. Ella is the worthy recipient of a Department of Education Award for the progress she has made in her learning in 2019. These awards recognise achievement and the values of aspiration and growth. Congratulations to Ella and her family.

Teachers are currently very busy working hard on organising class placements for next year. This is a very considered process as we are keen to place every child in the optimal spot for their learning.

Kind Regards,

Louise Lynch
Principal

Kath’s Spot

After regularly visiting Uluru and working with the local Anangu people, I had the pleasure last weekend of flying back for 5 days to Uluru to celebrate the ‘Close the Climb’ with our local friends.

What an amazing, humbling experience it was to be there at this special time. We were personally invited to head out to Mutijulu, the closed Indigenous community, and help run a disco pool party with the Muti kids, as the sun set over the rock after the climb was officially closed. The silhouette of this amazing precious rock with a coloured sky wrapping around it, was a spectacular site as we mucked around with the little people, dancing, playing in the pool and sharing in a bbq.

We were also fortunate to attend the official celebrations where Peter Garrett did a surprise performance with his guitarist. He spoke prior about the impact that finally closing the climb and respecting the local Anangu and their wishes will make.

I was struck by the patience and understanding that the local Indigenous people have had, even as they watched many trampling all over their sacred land for years and years. And, as my son Ben wrote in a persuasive essay when he was in Year 6, “if any theme park had a ride had 37 people die on, that ride would be shut down”.

Being there again I was reminded I need to parent with more of the patience and understanding that my Anangu friends show to so many people. They don’t get angry or raise their voice at people, when they do the wrong thing. If people make a mistake, they don’t continue to remind them of their mistakes; they take them on a Mala Walk and try to educate them about what is respectful. They are softly spoken, and yet they will laugh and sing and celebrate in joy. The more things matter, they don’t get louder, they get softer. They weep when others are weeping, and they celebrate when others are celebrating. I think I am going to try being a bit more like this throughout my parenting.

Do these values and ways of parenting sound appealing to you? What values do you want to show to your children?

Here at Snug Primary, Communtiy, Acceptance, Respect, Excellence and Safety have been really important over many years, but what is important to you? Do your children know what’s important to you? Could they name it?

Many Blessings
