Principal’s Report

Dear Families,

The lead up to the end of term is very busy! This fortnight our Year 3, 4 and 5 students are participating in the annual Swimming and Water Safety Program. The students make wonderful progress with a swimming lesson every day and by the end of the fortnight we always see great gains in confidence and skills. Classes are also busy with excursions and Kitchen/Garden sessions for our younger classes. With students engaging in learning across different situations, our focus Habit of the Mind for the last two weeks of term is “Snug CARES, every place, every time.” This is a reminder and reinforcement for students that we uphold our Snug CARES values no matter where we or what we are doing. Our Snug students consistently stand out as respectful citizens in all situations.

This week our Year 6 students have presented their play, ‘Matilda.’ It has been a wonderful experience to see the characters in this well-known story come to life with such vibrancy. The set for this play is outstanding – thank you to Emma Horswill and your band of helpers for your creative efforts with this. Also many thanks to everyone who helped with the vast array of jobs needed to bring the event together – costumes, hair, make-up, lights, sound, music, props, photography, programs, tickets, foyer decoration and more. Thank you to the teachers, teacher assistants and other school staff who give a great deal of their own time to support students in our Drama program. Of course, the biggest thanks of all go to Lorraine O’Malley who once again has guided our students to be the very best they can be with her infinite skills and never ending hard work. Thanks everyone!

Recently we received our 2019 NAPLAN results. We are particularly pleased with our Year 3 and Year 5 results in the Writing assessments. Writing has been a priority for teacher learning and student focus for the last couple of years and the results of everyone’s learning are exciting. We will continue to examine our NAPLAN results to guide us in setting ongoing and future priorities.

We have a couple of staffing changes for Term 4. Andrea Lockwood will be teaching P.E. and is already planning a range of activities as well as our Athletics Carnival, to be held on Wednesday October 30th. Thank you to Russ Miller who has been our P.E. teacher for the last few weeks of this term. We welcome Katie Hedge back from maternity leave – Katie will be working for 2 days a week in the Flying Start support role. Kim Helm will be continuing with one a day a week in the Flying Start role as well as teaching Prep A on Mondays, with Jo McGruther teaching Prep A Monday-Thursday.

The school holidays are only a week away. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed for an exciting Term 4.

Kath’s Spot

Sometimes as a grown up, and a parent, it is hard to choose in the moment to put others needs before our own, but it’s an important task. This week we have been looking at the habit of the mind of Snug CARES: every time, every place. But what does that really mean?

Well, C.A.R.E.S. stands for Community, Acceptance, Respect, Excellence and Safety, so carrying out each of these things involves many moments of looking out for others. I know sometimes if you are playing a game with mates, it might feel tricky to stop and welcome and accept someone else into the game, but this is important to do.

It is just as important to respect others and their beliefs. As grown ups you might think differently to others and we don't have to agree with their opinions, but we do have to respect them. It is important to keep us, our children, and our community Safe. This shows that Community is important to us.

Snug C.A.R.E.S is something that we can put into action everyday. There is always a moment to be kind to each other, to invite someone else into our activity or to care for them in some way. I'd hate it if I got further down the track and realised I hadn't taken the time to care for others. What a sad moment that would be. Thinking about this gives me more ‘get up and go’ to go out and try more to put it into practise, because its not just for little people… Snug CARES for everyone!

Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Kinder B

In Kinder B we have been learning about animals and their habitats. We watched a video on how birds make their nests and watched the baby birds hatch out and grow. We made our own nests. We read about echidnas and made our own echidnas from clay. We created habitats for our echidnas from materials we collected in Bush Kinder. We have been learning how to make patterns with two or three objects in maths.
