Principal’s Report
Dear Families,
The Winter chill has certainly hit us this week, with a couple of very icy mornings. The frost makes our school grounds look beautiful but it also makes for very slippery surfaces! Please take care when walking through our grounds on frosty mornings and remind your children about safety.
This week we have been celebrating NAIDOC Week, with all classes joining in learning experiences at our Bush Classroom and enjoying a range of items at our Assembly. Thank you to the Aboriginal community members who have visited classes to share cultural experiences and also to the staff members who have worked hard to organise the week’s events.
All families, Prep-6, will have received mid-year reports by the end of this week. These reports are a comprehensive coverage of students learning throughout the first half of this year. The reports also identify areas for future focus in English and Mathematics. Parent-Teacher discussions for families of students in Kinder to Year 5 will be held next week – we encourage all parents to make a time to talk with teachers. This is a great opportunity to celebrate student achievements and to work together to support ongoing learning.
It is hard to believe that Term 2 is almost over! It has been a very exciting and busy term, with events including Cross Country, the 4/5A and 4/5B Play, NAIDOC Week, the ongoing construction of our new gym and, most importantly of all, the rich learning opportunities that our students undertake in core learning areas every day. The growth in student learning across this term has been outstanding. Underpinning our students’ approach to learning is Snug CARES – the values that we embrace across the school that allow every member of the school community to be respectful and courageous learners. Well done everybody!
We have some staffing changes for Term 3. Congratulations to Angela Burbury who has won the position of Principal at Collinsvale Primary School.
Loretta Woolley will continue as Acting Assistant Principal at Snug while the position is advertised and filled.
Congratulations to Bonnie Jeffrey who has won the position of External School Review Leader. Sadly for us this means that Bonnie will not be returning to Snug Primary School. We all wish Bonnie the very best for the future. We will be expressing our heart felt thanks to Bonnie when she visits our school soon.
Principal arrangements for Term 3 will be announced as soon as possible.

Mistakes are something that happen all the time, they are what we learn from in our day to day lives, but sometimes they can really emotionally effect us. When I make a mistake or wrong decision sometimes it is easy to apologise and move on, and other times gee it is hard to acknowledge my own choices, and to go to the person and apologise. I wonder whether for you this is also the case?
When my youngest boy was at Family Day Care when he was little, he had made a poor choice and his carer Pip had asked him to go to the say sorry to the other little boy. He had swung around to her and said "But Pip sometimes it is really hard to say sorry". When I came to pick him up she said she had been reflecting on this herself, and she commented that sometimes it is hard to say sorry.
You can understand sometimes when children hesitate when asked to apologise to someone else, however in saying this it is an important task to carry out. Apologising to someone else, is an opportunity both to acknowledge our own wrong decisions or behaviour, and to make a conscious decision as to how we will choose to do things differently next time. This in turn will serve us, and make us better people, and better members of our community.
Relationships are important in our lives, so I want to encourage us all, big and small, to be brave. When I look up "Brave" in the dictionary it says "Brave: Courageous, dauntless, perhaps a little bit daring, a person who is brave faces dangerous or difficult situations with courage". Well as I read that, I know that's what I want my boys to be! Lets all be learning from every opportunity, even when we make mistakes it is actually okay, as long as we learn from those mistakes. Michael Jordan once said "I failed time and time again, and that is why I succeed".
Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Year 1-2C

In 1/2C we are enjoying learning about place. We have looked at why the places we love are special to us and we understand that places are special to different people for different reasons.
With this understanding, NAIDOC week has been a wonderful time for us to reflect the land we live on and celebrate that it was been important for Aboriginal people for thousand s and thousands of years. We have been very fortunate to have two of our parents who are members of the Aboriginal community, who have come in to share with us their knowledge.
Joe Smith, Ruby’s dad, taught us about the history and culture of the different Aboriginal tribes of Tasmania. The children were able to see and touch some of the resources used, such as ochre, stone tools, echidna spines and wallaby skins. Very popular was feeling a basket full of mutton bird feathers – very soft!
Dwyane Everettsmith, Tumaia’s dad, gave us a great session in palawa kani, the Tasmanian Aboriginal language. We made a good start and hope to keep practising and build on our skills as the year goes on.
We also enjoyed some time by the creek in the bush, sitting around the fire and looking at the plants and rocks in our area.

NAIDOC Week at Snug
This week Snug Primary School has enjoyed numerous NAIDOC celebrations. Early in the week, Kinder to Year1/2 had fun making fossils, learning the meaning of aboriginal symbols through gumleaf art, identifying native plants growing in our outdoor learning space and enjoying a hot potato topped with Lemon Myrtle and Tasmanian Pepper Berry Butter. Traditional Aboriginal stories were told by Aboriginal Elder Joey.
Year 3 enjoyed the warmth from the campfire and munching on Lemon Myrtle Shortbreads they had prepared during kitchen class. Aboriginal Elder Auntie Wendell told traditional aboriginal stories using Okra to create imagery and add meaning to the story being told.
Year 4/5/6 and visiting school Moonah Primary School celebrated NAIDOC week on Thursday and Friday. Students were welcomed officially by Auntie Wendell before engaging in traditional activities including spear throwing, fossil making, learning the meaning of aboriginal symbols through gumleaf art, tree creation using natural resources, canvas art, storytelling, cooking and a game of Marngrook (traditional Australian Rules football game created by Aboriginal people).
Around the camp fire students enjoyed an indigenous inspired feast cooked by the students. The menu included Wallaby, Tasmanian Pepper Berry and Quince Stew, Wattle Seed and Bush Tomato Risotto, Native Flower & Green Salad with Lemon Myrtle dressing, Yolla marinated in Tasmanian Pepper Berry & Black Currants and Roasted Potato served with Lemon Myrtle butter.
Thank you to staff, volunteers and students for making these wonderful NAIDOC Week activities possible.
