Principal’s Report

Dear Families,

Our core business as a school is to provide every student with quality learning experiences matched to individual needs. As educators, we are also learners and our learning is directly linked to improving student outcomes. Currently many of our teachers are involved in the Middle Years Literacy Project, which is targeting Writing in Years 4-8. Teachers are working with colleagues from Kingston Primary, Illawarra Primary and Kingston High School to analyse student writing and develop strategies for improvement. Our Early Years teachers are involved in the Refocus Teaching and Learning Initiative which aims to further student learning through play-based inquiry experiences. We look forward to sharing our progress with both of these exciting initiatives as the year progresses.

Another amazing program we offer at Snug is our Bush Classroom, managed by Linda Jolleys and greatly supported by Dave Groves and Aboriginal elders. Recently some classes from a city school spent the day in our outdoor learning space, exploring bushcraft, edible plants and Aboriginal arts. The feedback from the visiting school was highly positive and a great reflection on the quality experiences we offer.

Our Election Day Stall on May 18th was a great success, raising just over $1100. Thank you to Dearne Coad, many students and parents who baked a variety of goodies to sell on the day. The funds raised from the stall will go towards supporting our wonderful Kitchen/Garden program.

We have enjoyed beautiful weather over the last few months and now Winter is here! Please make sure that children have warm, named school uniform jumpers and jackets as we encourage outdoor play in all but the wettest of weather. Beanies and scarves are also available for purchase at our uniform shop.

Kind regards

Ms Susan Jeffery

Kath’s Spot

Can you think back to the last running race that you have done? Was it the recent City to Casino, or was it a long time ago when you yourself were in school?

As I watch all our students running the track at Huonville I am reminded about all those different stages of running. The excitement and nerves before the race, then as you take off with all the energy in the world. If you are anything like me, it soon moves to the stage of feeling like you are about to throw up, or when your legs are aching and you start thinking ‘how much longer?’.

It’s a process much the same as parenting hey! The excitement of knowing the baby is coming, then you have all the energy and inspiration of starting this new exciting phase... but then you get all those sleepless nights, and tough issues and you can start thinking “how much longer of this stage?”.

In those moments, that’s when we need some strategies. Like in a running race and you get a stitch and a marshal might yell out “put your hands up above your head, keep on going, you’re doing a great job”. In our parenting we need friends that are going to call us and tell us “you’re doing a good job!”. We need to be able to stick our hands up when we need a hand, and we also need to be able to ask for directions or advice when we are not sure where to go from here.

So I encourage you all to put people around you that are going to help support you in this. People who will come to your aid when you need it most! But don’t forget to be able to do that for them as well. We all need to help a mate when they lose their footing or fall down!

Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Year 3B

3B have been exploring living things in Science and asking the question, what do living things need to survive? On Tuesday 28th May we visited the Marine Discovery Centre at Woodbridge. We had a fantastic day of learning, as you can see from our photographs.

A central theme for Year 3 this year is ‘My Place’ and we’ve been exploring this in many different ways such in our writing, in our physical environment, in our state, in our country and now, in Science. A highlight of our visit to the MDC was the vision shot on the underwater bait camera which gave us an insight into the marine life living in our local area. We will use this information to continue the rich exploration of our central theme and we cannot wait to see where ‘My Place’ takes us next!
