Principal’s Report
It was a pleasure to accompany Ruby Sutherland on Tuesday afternoon to the Department of Education’s Award Ceremony for Top 1% and Top in School for the NAPLAN testing for 2018. Together with her family and Mrs Pullen, we celebrated Ruby’s effort with these tests and her academic achievements. Mr Jeremy Rockcliff presented Ruby with her two certificates. We are very proud of her striving for personal excellence.
As you would be aware, the Australian Education Union has advised members to take actions to raise public awareness of workload and pay issues facing teachers currently. Members have been advised not to write comments on end of year reports. As a whole school, we have decided to not include our usual 150 word end of year comment from class teachers and a short comment from senior staff on reports. This will ensure our reports for families all contain the same information and that they do not identify union members or non-members on staff. We are confident that we have excellent communication channels and our families know they are welcome to come and speak with teachers at any time regarding student progress. The report will contain ratings against the Australian Curriculum areas taught and effort ratings against our Snug CARES rubric. The actions do not affect Personal Learning Plan reporting. Please come and speak with me if you have any questions regarding our end of year reporting.
We have been notified of possible late school openings (11am), on WEDNESDAY 28th NOVEMBER, so AEU members can attend meetings. At this stage the decision to open the school late rests with the Minister for Education and we will advise families how this will affect Snug as soon as we are given instruction regarding this.
We have recently filled two vacancies for our Education Facilities Attendant positions. Congratulations to Stan Coad and we welcome Richard Adams to the Snug team. I know our community will make them feel welcome as they begin their permanent positions.

The year has gone so quickly, yet we still have four weeks for great learning! I looked at Jay the other day and realised he must have had a growth spurt because his shorts are looking a little shorter and his shoes are looking a little bit shabbier. Before we know it though it’ll be the start of next year and we will be out there hunting down ‘mainly black or mainly white’ shoes and trying our best to get a pair of shorts that are a bit bigger so they last the whole year.
This end of the year can be really tough for some financially, and just the lead up to this time can be stressful. Every little bit counts, and every little bit can make a difference.
When Chris and I were both full time volunteering, we had some times that were really, really hard. I remember a relative letting me know we were all going to chip in for a present for someone and when I found out how much we were putting in, it was half of our budget for that time. The stress levels were huge as I handed over that money knowing that it would impact our little family. I now realise I should have spoken up more, but it was hard.
We are all stretched, but for some it is harder than others. If you are doing it tough please yell out, so I can help to find a way to support you through this time. And for those that are doing okay, I wonder if there is a way that you can help support others. Towards the end of the year I have the opportunity to give out food hampers and food vouchers where I can. If you could donate towards the food vouchers - even a gold coin helps - or if you could drop off some consumables that could go in a food hamper I’d greatly appreciate it! I’ll set up a little basket in the office, if you would like to drop anything in to help support your community.
Towards the end of the year I always have my kids fill a bag full of toys to clear out of the cupboard, and they choose who to pass them onto, an op shop or a playgroup or something. Every family I am sure, finds ways to help support others, this is one of my ways of helping the children to see others along their journey.
As we come through these last few weeks, please remind the students every day is a day when they can learn something new, or meet a new friend, pass on a smile to someone else, or help support in some way. When everyone is feeling a little tired, or anxious along the way, it helps to have someone help us up when we trip over, or stretch out a hand to us when we need it most. We all need each other, don’t we? I know I certainly need others around me. Otherwise I wouldn’t be the person I am today!!
Many Blessings
