Principal’s Report

Snug Primary School Association are a hardworking and dedicated group of parents who meet twice a term to help fundraise and give input into school improvement. Their biggest fundraiser is the Snug Primary School Fair on Saturday 22nd September. If you have not already made an offer of help, please contact the class co-ordinator for your child’s year group. Funds raised will go towards projects decided by the committee and school. Our school vision statement begins with Working Together and the fair is a fantastic opportunity to contribute towards the future of the school.

Our Year 3-6 classes are undertaking an exciting literacy project in conjunction with Kingston High School. The Middle Years Literacy Project will run for 3 years and the outcome is to lift results in writing as our students transition into high school. We have been lucky enough to engage Professor Beverly Derewianka to work with our teachers and she will be here next week observing, modelling and suggesting quality ways to teach sentence structure and grammar. Your child may be involved with this project if they are in Year 3-6. Writing samples, surveys and ‘think tanks’ are part of the data collection to find out student attitudes towards writing and where we can improve. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to know more.

At Snug we explicitly teach social skills every week and reinforce these every day. Currently we are looking at our Snug CARES value of Acceptance and how we accept that sometimes things might go wrong with our day. Keeping calm, keeping perspective and keeping it small, remind us that in life, sometimes things will go wrong and that we can accept that, and still keep going with our learning.

As you may be aware, our Year 3/4 classes have prompted our school into a War on Waste. We are being more mindful of the waste we produce and are creatively solving waste problems. The school now has an eWaste volunteer who takes away our electrical waste, our reusable lunch provision crockery looks beautiful as well as reduces waste, class heating has been upgraded with thermostats to heat our rooms at the right times and we are all being aware of what we put in the bin. Another Tasmanian primary school held their school fair and produced only one bin full of waste at the end of the evening. I wonder what we can achieve together?

Annual General Meeting, Tuesday 30th October

Kath’s Spot

How do you teach your children about the value of money I wonder? I was listening to the radio recently where people shared funny stories of being a teenager and trawling through the school bin to find their dental plates, because they had accidentally thrown them out with their lunch scraps and knew the value of them and that their parents would be upset if they lost them.

Over the next week or so we will be sending a booklet home with all the details of what we will be selling at the fair and for how much these items will cost, and it will also include a map of where everything will be situated.

If your children have a few dollars to spend at the fair, I encourage you to use this booklet to have a chat about the costs of different things, and help them to get a bit of a picture as to what they may want to spend their money on before attending the actual fair. I believe moments such as these are great opportunities to learn. We want to provide our children with tools, to be able to make great decisions and be able to budget for all that life will entail. But rather than make it so huge for them at this stage, let’s just try giving them opportunities to work out simple tasks to start with. Simple questions like “what change would get if you paid for a wand with a $5 note”, can provide a great conversation.

We will also be showcasing on Facebook during the coming two weeks, some of the wonderful creations that will be sold at our fair, so keep an eye out for them!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Remember be kind to yourself and others!

Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Prep A

Prep A “On The Move”

Prep have been investigating how things move in our Science Unit ‘On The Move’. We have explored different types of motion, focussing in particular on how objects roll, slide and spin. We have learnt that the shape of an object influences the way it moves. For example, we know that objects with curved surfaces (such as spheres) roll well, and that a flat surface helps objects to slide. Students have developed their understanding through a variety of hands-on experiences including using ramps, marble runs, spinning tops, playing with cars and moving toys, as well as making some vehicles of our own. There has certainly been lots of exciting learning while we have been ‘on the move’!
