Principal’s Report
“A rising tide lifts all boats…”
How wonderful it is to see the passion for writing increase across the school. Precise vocabulary choices, deliberate sentence structures and longer writing engagement periods have been noted across the school in all grades. From the littlest to the tallest, we are all zealous about getting our thinking down on paper or screen. Please support our priority curriculum area by asking your child’s teacher about the writing program and expectations
With our school fair quickly approaching, it is a good time to remind our community members that they need to have a Working With Vulnerable People card when volunteering here at the school. Please check the expiry date on your card and renew online before it expires, so you do not need to go through the lengthy process of re applying.

Snug Primary are so proud of our lunch provision program which has been in place for almost a decade. Our SAKG program has been used as an example of best practice in schools and we are a Gold Accreditation level with the Tasmanian Canteen Association; something many schools strive to achieve. Dearne and the team work very hard to ensure they adhere to the strict guidelines regarding portion size, healthy cooking methods, ingredient choice and menu choice. All this for an amazing low price for our families. Please support our lunch provision program on Wednesdays and celebrate another innovative and healthy part of what we do.

Kath’s Spot
Disappointment. It’s one of those feelings that can often be felt after someone else’s behaviour or actions, whether it be a child’s, a sibling’s, a partner’s, a friend’s, or someone else’s. Even a stranger’s behaviour can affect us, or missing out on something can make us feel this way. It’s how you deal with that disappointment that is the question. How do you deal with this emotion?
Sometimes it makes us feel really sad - inside and out - and crying, journaling or getting our own space can sometimes help in these moments. Sometimes debriefing with someone else can help, as long as this is appropriate. Just pouring out on someone for the sake of it, is not okay though. And debriefing is not just downing someone else to another; it is reflecting on your behaviour, or your response, and how you could make something different of the situation.
A wise mentor of mine used to always say “never say anything that you wouldn’t be happy for the person to hear if they were listening at the door”. I know that’s a challenge sometimes, but it is actually a great way to work out whether you should be saying what you are or not. Sometimes it is right to provide feedback, so others know the impact for you.
Recently I felt really disappointed about something but then, as I reflected, I had to realise how grateful I was for everything else. I had done this reflection in private and I am so glad.
Be careful to not make big decisions in the moment of feeling this way. Just like if I am not happy with something in a dance lesson, I might talk with the dance teacher, but if it is still not resolved, then I might go to the owner of the dance school. If you are disappointed with something at school, talk with the teacher, and/or the Assistant Principal, and/or Bonnie, our Principal. Don’t leave something unresolved and pick up and move schools. For the benefit of the child, seek help from other sources.
Feeling disappointed is not bad, sometimes even just owning that you feel that emotion is enough to defuse those ‘red zone’ feelings. Next time it comes up for you, stop for a moment and use it as a learning curve to reflect on how you use this emotion.
Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Year 1/2A
The Kitchen/Garden Experience
Term 3 has got off to an exciting and adventurous start, with four sessions spent between the school kitchen and garden. During our first kitchen session, 1/2A were introduced to safe kitchen practices. We learned how to carry a knife safely and the ‘bear paw technique’ used for cutting food. After our induction, we created some delicious pizzas! Each group was given a unique mystery item; it was to be ‘hero’ of the pizza. These mystery items included: blueberries, stewed quinces, salami, egg and zucchini. As you can imagine, we had a range of sweet and savoury pizzas. Yummy! Have you ever sampled a blueberry, marshmallow, chocolate and crab-apple jelly pizza? 1/2A would highly recommend this interesting combination!
In our second kitchen experience, 1/2A made fresh sushi. For some students, it was their first time trying nori (edible seaweed), wasabi and tuna. Everyone selected their own ingredients and got rolling. Our thanks go to Dearne for planning these engaging kitchen experiences and to our wonderful volunteers who helped make it a fun, safe and efficient time. Thank you.
This week, 1/2A visited the school garden and worked with Dave. We began creating some frightening scarecrows out of preloved clothing, buoys, wooden stakes and rope. We hope that our scarecrows will protect Snug Primary’s fruit and vegetable patch from ravenous birds! We look forward to our final gardening lesson with Dave.

Australian Antarctic Festival - The Penguin Project
Recently, the 1/2 Team took part in the Australian Antarctic Festivals’ initiative, The Penguin Project. Each child was given the opportunity to decorate a plywood penguin. Both sides of the penguins were carefully painted, using a bright and colourful palette. Last weekend, our beautiful penguins were on display at the Mac 2 Tas Ports Cruise Terminal. Over 8000 children from schools within Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Brisbane took part in this event. Many Snug families visited our penguins and took part in the Antarctic festivities. A highlight for many was a visit see to the Huskies.

Antarctica: Changes Through Time
This term we are learning about the cold and harsh continent, Antarctica. During our HASS, Science and Makerspace sessions, we are exploring how Antarctica has changed over time and the animals that inhabit it. If you have any informative picture books on Antarctica, we would love to see them!
