Principal’s Report

A wonderful week of learning on and off site this week with our Year 6 Camp and Year 2-6 Swimming Carnival. Our Year 6 team reported a brilliant 3 days at Blue Lagoon Camp with many challenging ‘stretch’ experiences. It was wonderful to see the group develop strong team work and cohesion as they become the leaders of our school.

Yesterday saw our Year 2-6 students participate in our Swimming Carnival at Huonville pool. There were many personal best performances and a real sense of team as Jeffery, Torpy and Hartz battled it out in the pool and for great audience participation. In the assembly this afternoon we will announce the winner of the carnival (the points were very close!)

A reminder that our ICAS competitions are being offered again this year. These external competitions are a great way for students to extend themselves in a different way and our school has a history of achieving very well in this learning format. Please look out for more information about how to enrol your child in one of these tests.

Kath’s Spot

During this week I was fortunate to join the Grade 6s on the last day of their camp and I noticed something very quickly...everyone was tired.

You know those moments when you are so tired that little things make you burst into tears, or someone might say something and you take it a completely different way? When your whole body aches, and you would prefer to curl up in bed, can you recall a time recently when you felt like this?

What happens for you as a parent when you feel like this? I know for me, these are the moments when I can feel a bit more short with the kids, when I might say “if you can just do this please, I’ll explain the reasons why later”.

I guess it’s important to realise Parenting is a full time job, and this is why it is so tricky when we are tired or unwell. I find it helpful to name up to the kids how I am travelling so that they can be more aware of all the little things that may not be helpful along the way. I may tell them how I am feeling, so that they can see that asking a thousand questions right in this very moment may not be very helpful. If they are unaware of how you are, they tend to have this perception that ‘Mum is unstoppable and she can do everything, all at the same time...for everyone’. Helping them, may then serve you in the long run.

In saying this, don’t over burden them, just give them enough data for it to make sense, for example “I have a really bad headache at the moment, so I wonder if we might be able to have a bit of quiet time so that it doesn’t get any worse”.

This week when you are feeling frustrated or tired, pause for a moment and see how communication may help in the moment. Is there any miscommunication?

Hopefully keeping the channels of communication open between you and your children can help everyone in those tricky, tough moments. I’ll be thinking of you all, especially as the colds and bugs start traveling around.

Many Blessings

Just head to any Commonwealth Bank with some ID for yourself and your child (a drivers licence and birth certificate, for example) and ask to open a Youthsaver Account for School Banking. You’ll be given a deposit book and Dollarmites wallet on the spot and will be able to begin banking the next business day - it’s that easy!
