Principal’s Report

Welcome to Term 2.

It was wonderful to see our students running into school on Monday morning full of energy and enthusiasm for learning. This term sees our Year 3 and 5 students participating in the NAPLAN testing next week and we wish them all the best as they strive to show what they have learned.

Yesterday students competed in the school cross country and there were many wonderful personal achievements. Our thanks go to our Kingston High School leaders for their assistance and encouragement and also to Mrs Jac Parker for her organisation for the day. Mrs Parker will be leaving us next week to take up full time work at Campania District High. We wish Mrs Parker all the best for her new position and welcome Mr Max Watson who will be joining our teaching team.

As the colder weather comes upon us can I ask that all students to stay looking smart in full school uniform. We have maroon beanies and scarves for sale in the uniform shop which are acceptable uniform items. Warm coats, hats, gloves and scarves are to be worn outside only and students are encouraged to bring an alternate pair of shoes/slippers for indoor use.

Our teachers have a focus on Writing this term and are trialling new and intriguing ways to teach the structures of different text types and strategies of good writers. Many students enjoy writing for many purposes and benefit from practising at home. One idea is to set up a ‘writing nook’ at home for children to come to when they are inspired to write. It could be to write a list, a birthday card, a story or to persuade you to give them more pocket money. Have a look for a scribble nook to maybe write a book. A cook book nook? Enjoy.

Kath’s Spot

Welcome back to the start of Term 2, and an extra big welcome to new families that are joining us this term. I hope during holidays you had time to relax and also time to spend time as a family together. We were able to catch up together, as well as on the housework, along with going out bush together, off to the skate park and we even had the pleasure of taking the boys to the movies.

In the first week, I took our 3 boys out to see the new Lego Batman 3 Movie. It is a film about the character Batman learning to not just go things alone, but needing help from the whole team. In fact, trying to do everything by himself, he wasn't successful, but instead he needed the help of each member of the team, to perform their skills in order to make the task successful.

Isn't that just like life? Sometimes we have to learn not just to go full steam ahead by ourselves, but we need to include others around us. In fact it is the skills that others might bring that will help to get the job done, and often to a higher standard as well. It also helps me with my sanity if I am willing to accept help from others.

To make a real impact in our family, our school and our work places, we have to be willing to look at ourselves, to receive feedback even, and to be willing to make changes. Those changes we make, can then impact all of these social circles in which we contribute to.

I think Michael Jackson has said it best...

What changes can you be working on?

Many Blessings

Looking at how authors use language to develop imagery

I know what it’s like

I know what it’s like when everything around you is collapsing
I know what feels like when you can’t keep control
It tastes like a bitter lime
I know what it feels like when you can’t keep calm
I know what it’s like to feel angry

Chalahn

Reflection

It’s like no one in the world cares about your opinion
It’s hard to control; you turn savage
It’s regretful, you want to take it back, but you know you just can’t
It’s unfair and deceitful
Burning hot embers on my tongue forcing me to say things I don’t really mean
It destroys everything in its path
It’s a cold, cruel dome
A warm comfortable fire turns to black cold soot
The sun becomes a stormy grey cloud
Don’t worry you’re not alone
I know what it’s like to feel angry

Things Mrs Hastie would NEVER Say!

Dr Who is for babies; I hate it
You broke school property; good girl
Cocktails for everyone
Our first game today is Punch Wars
Who needs social skills, our school’s fine without them
SNUG Cares is stupid!

Hine

Things My Mum would Never Say

Don’t do any homework tonight; pizzas instead
Alright kids, you’re way too tired; go and party
The door is locked, can you break the window for me instead
Don’t eat those vegies, fast food instead

I know what it’s Like to Feel Loved

It tastes like warm, yummy, hot chocolate rolling down my throat
It’s my whole family going out together for dinner
It’s getting kisses and cuddles

Charlotte

Fear

Fear is a dark, evil place in my mind
Fear sounds like demons whispering in my ear
Fear is long talons scratching my face
Fear is a small place where monsters lurk
Fear is the black crow circling danger

Chalahn

Brother Says

‘GET OUT OF MY ROOM AND DON’T COME BACK’, he shouts angrily
I stay and keep annoying him; just to get him worked up
I LOVE IT!

Jorja

I know what it’s like

I know what it’s like to be angry
You stomp
Kick
Pinch
Punch
And yell
Then run
Slam
And cry
Finally I rest
Relax
And calm down
Then try to remember
Remember why you were angry
But you can’t
You’ve already forgotten

Teo

Sister Says

Get out of my room or I’ll smash your Lego
I think to myself; WHAT A BRAT!
I DON’T leave
Instead, I dance on her bed
Just to annoy her
She suddenly pounces like a striking snake
I
Love
To
Annoy
My
Putrid sister
I love her with all my heart!

Keavy

Under the Sink

Moving closer and closer
Disgusting black eyes
Wiggly, dirty tail
SNAP, the trap bangs shut
Another flat black rat!

Asthma Australia

Important news for parents about the Asthma & Anaphylaxis Schools Program:

Students with asthma – no matter how mild

If your child has asthma – even if it is quite mild – please let us know if you haven’t already.

We require an up to date written Asthma Action Plan completed by the student’s doctor.

We just completed training with the Asthma Foundation of Tasmania. They told us that there is no way of predicting if a student may suddenly have a major flare up, even if it has not happened before.

So please let us know so we can fulfil our duty of care and keep an eye on them.

Students with anaphylaxis

Please make sure that we have your child’s most recent Anaphylaxis Action Plan.

The plan that we are referring to is the one that has the patient’s photo attached and signed off by a doctor.

According to ASCIA, Australia’s authority on anaphylaxis, the plans should be renewed by your doctor at least once a year.

Any questions on asthma or anaphylaxis?

If you have any queries, talk to the Asthma Foundation of Tasmania, the organisers of the Schools Program, by visiting the link below or calling 1800 278 462.
