Principal’s Report

As we draw to a close the end of another year here at Snug, I have been reflecting on the achievements and successes of our school. Whilst there are many, both great and small, I wanted to highlight some to our school community:

  • Our new playground with equipment selected by student input and behaviour data
  • Our mural depicting Tasmanian Aboriginal trading routes
  • Our Outdoor Learning Area for inquiry and discovery
  • Outstanding high growth in Year 3 reading and numeracy and Year 5 Writing and Grammar and Punctuation NAPLAN data
  • Above the Tasmanian average for every single one of the 79 School Satisfaction Survey questions from Parents, Students and Staff
  • The new Education Act changes that the School Association have discussed
  • Our feedback culture – teachers, students and staff giving feedback to each other to enable us all to grow and improve.

A personal highlight for me though was reflecting on our incredible Year 6 Daily PE Leaders program. Our leaders introduce themselves in Italian, tell their group the Learning Intention for the session, lead the activity, then get feedback both written and verbal for how the students AND the leaders can improve next time. The session ends with applause for two students who have shown outstanding effort. Incredible!

Congratulations to our Year 6s and staff for a polished performance at their Graduation assembly. They showcased a range of skills and abilities highlighting our vision statement, “Working together to achieve personal excellence”. We wish them all the best for their next level of schooling.

Many classes are heading off for end of year excursions and I thank teachers for their thought and planning around our offsite learning.

On Wednesday 20th December students will visit their new classrooms for 2018 and meet their new teacher. Teachers have worked very hard to ensure classes are balanced and meet the needs of students. We are pleased to report all parent considerations submitted by the due date have been accommodated. Families will receive a small pamphlet outlining arrangements for 2018 and a school map for new classrooms. Please speak with me directly if you have any questions regarding our process.

Kath’s Spot

Last Friday our family headed off to the movies together, cashing in on rewards points, to see the movie ‘Wonder’. What a spectacular movie, that shows all different perspectives of living with those that have a disability. Take the tissues; it hits you right in the heart.

At one point a bully and their parents are in the Principal’s office discussing the young boys actions and next steps forward. His parents, believing their child was in the right, threatened that if he was to get a suspension they would stop all donations and would move him to another school. He pleaded with his parents “please don’t, I like it here, and I have friends here”. For him, his friendships far out-weighed the consequences of strong boundaries.

I remember when we were deciding which school to send our first son Tom to, and we went to lots of schools to check them out... ultimately visiting Snug Primary and falling in love with the School. I felt like the weight was on my shoulders to make a great decision, because I felt like it was a commitment I was making for all 4 boys to attend this primary school.

I know throughout school life there may be issues along the way, but if and when they occur, I encourage you all to follow them up with teachers or the like. Please don’t be quick to jump ship, and not have issues resolved. We all learn from dealing with situations, and we want to care for everyone the best we can. We would hate to think there is something we could have done, but we didn’t have the opportunity to help.

In fact, research shows that consistently is a big factor for children in their period of growing up. It is for all of us really! The more consistent and stable life can be, helps self-confidence to grow, endurance and strength to develop, and the willingness to have a go becomes evident.

Life can be tricky to juggle sometimes, if you don’t know ‘where to from here?’ Please touch base.

Many Blessings

Grade 5A and 5B combined classes to study plants, seeded pod and flowers similar to how botanist Sir Joseph Banks and Dan Solander on board the Endeavour, would have. Students were involved in flower pressing, plant identification and documenting and drawing plants and seeds. These famous explorers have acknowledged by plants and places being named after them. Can you think of some?

Snug Jingles 2017

Thank you to everyone who attended Snug Jingles this year. It was fantastic to see so many families attend and enjoy our community event. We are pleased to report that we were able to raise $4,000 for the school from the sale of raffle tickets as well as the sale of food, drinks and sweets on the night.

A huge thank you to our band for getting us into the Christmas spirit and guiding us through our Christmas Carols again this year. It was wonderful to also have some of our students performing for us on the night.

We were lucky enough to once again have the Snug Fire Brigade call in with Santa and his elves this year– defiantly a highlight of the evening.

Thank you to our SRC for judging our dress up competition and also to the class groups and OSHC who contributed to the event with all of their festive decorations and by cooking the sweets sold on the night – They were delicious!

A very special thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped not only on the night but leading up to the event – we could not do it without you!
