Principal’s Report
Snug Shines!
Congratulations, Snug Primary School, for being Tasmania’s first school to be accredited with eSmart Status. Ms Katie Heard has worked hard to ensure the planning, actions and programs are in place for our school to use digital technology safely and responsibly. This state wide initiative develops communities of safe cyber users and helps prevent cyber bullying.
Our Year 4 team shone on Wednesday as they performed ‘Cirque du Snug’ for an overflowing audience. Congratulations to all the cast and crew. Our dramatic arts program ensures all students are included and their talents celebrated and we certainly saw many stellar personal performances.
Our Quiz night was an incredible success last Saturday night with over $3000 being raised for our school. Many thanks to Dearne for her organisation and Alby for his ‘Quiz Mastering’, and all the other volunteers and helpers to ensure a successful night. We would love to make it an annual event.
Tonight sees our Year 5 and 6 band members perform at the Derwent Entertainment Centre for the Southern Primary Combined Schools Concert Bands and Choir Concert. These hard working students have practiced all year and will perform in front of over 5000 people. We wish them all the very best for a sparkling performance.
With only 14 learning days left, our teachers are still working hard to stretch students’ thinking and learning. Our data collection and assessments are showing significant progress across all grades and I would like to specifically thank all of our teachers for their hard work and dedication to making a difference for every child.

What are you like in stressful moments? Do you run, do you cry, do you feel sad or want to be alone?
This Wednesday was a crazy day for me, with both the Grade 4 Play (the final play for the year) and a grant due at 2pm I realised a few things about myself. For me, I noticed my mind races, it ticks really fast and I feel like I am always attempting to get one step in front of where I currently am. When I am waiting for something, I noticed I pace- who would have thought hey!
At home when things get stressful I noticed I tend to clean, which is great for our living spaces, and also for my mental health. Its a bit like going for a walk and being able to clear your head. This can be a great tool to be able to release any anxieties, and if you can grab a friend to walk with, it means that you can talk out any issues along the way. I have a walking buddy who lives a couple of doors away, so we will often do an impromptu walk around Snug to get out and about and relieve the stresses.
Summer is wonderful for creating opportunities to get out and about too, so try to take those moments when you can. Could you walk around the oval while your child warms up for their football match? Or walk to the site if its close by? I recently was talking to the guest speaker at a fundraising dinner and he said he has a journal with unlined blank pages and he draws inside it, and writes quotes and thoughts that pop into his mind, as he processes his days and how he reacts in the world.
Its worth recognising how you feel in a stressful moment, because then you can put some strategies in place, before the stressful moment occurs. This then in turn helps the heightened moment to not be so stressful!!
Good luck in working out what it is for you, I think I am going to go away and have a think about how I can set myself up to be at my best.
Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Year 5B
In grade 5, we have been learning about fractions and decimals. We have made some fraction matching games to help us understand more about fractions and also just for fun. Most of us find decimals quite challenging. We have learned that decimals are parts of a whole number and a tenth (even though it sounds small) actually is bigger than a thousandth! Ismael

Grade 6 Grand Final Cook-Off
Congratulations to both Grade 6A and 6B Students who made it into the Grand Final Cook-Off. Both groups did exceptionally well impressing our guest judges with their cooking skills and excellent team work. Each group demonstrated how much they have learned through the Kitchen Garden Program. Our Grade 6 finalists were:
6A - Gemma, Cooper, Joe,
Charlotte and Makayla.
6B - Summer, Daniela, Kirralee, Kiara and
Amalie
The challenge for each team was to cook one small quiche following the recipe provided and a ‘Salad of the Imagination’ using their mystery ingredients within one hour. Our four guest judges observed the students and judged them on a list of criteria in the kitchen, followed by taste and presentation at the very end. Both groups worked very well and the scores were very close.
Congratulations to the winning team for 2017:
Grade 6A - Gemma, Cooper, Joe, Charlotte and Makayla.
Both teams should be felling very proud of themselves. Well done!
I would like to thank our four wonderful guest judges for kindly volunteering their time: Roger McShane, Sue Dyson, Jo Thalmann and Mike Oakley.
Roger and Sue were very impressed with the quiches both teams presented saying that “they tasted better than quiches we have eaten in the cafés around Hobart”.
