Principal’s Report

It is great to see so many of our students riding to school independently or with family members - a great way to Move Well. Our safety rule is to dismount when you get to the blue line and walk scooters or bikes to the rack for safe storage. Students are also welcome to ride around grounds after school AFTER the late bus has left. Enjoy riding and stay safe by wearing helmets at all times.

Recently we have had an increase in community members using our grounds after hours especially our new playground. We welcome everyone to use our space and ask that it is treated with respect and CARE. If you see others misusing our equipment or space please speak up for our school or call local police to warn others about consequences. We want our grounds to be a safe and happy place to play.

Teachers have been working with Professor Brian Cambourne last week, via online conferencing, to learn more about excellence in teaching writing. Brian is one of Australia’s most eminent researchers of literacy and learning and we are so excited to have him overseeing our learning in this area. He will be flying to Snug to work with us on October 27th for our Professional Learning Day.

Our class configurations have been finalised for 2018. Thank you to everyone who had input into the process. They will be:

2 x Kinder running Mon, Tues, and every second Wednesdays
2 x Prep classes
3 x Year 1/2 classes
4 x Year 3/4 classes
2 x Year 5 classes
2 X Year 6 classes

On Tuesday night the School Association met for their Annual General Meeting followed by the regular committee meeting. I am pleased to announce the appointment of these members:

Chairperson – Brendan Coad
Vice Chairperson – Stephanie Semmens
Secretary – Ali Nichols Howe
Treasurer – Lorna Barrett (Shadow Treasurer – Alice Godfrey)
Staff Members – Bonnie Jeffrey, Angela Burbury and Linda Jolleys

I once again thank the Association for their hard work and input into the management of the school and their ongoing support for everything we do.

Kath’s Spot

Last weekend my husband Chris was playing kick to kick with a teenager and he managed to slip on the wet grass and fracture his hip- DOH! As a result he has to have 2 weeks in a wheelchair with as little movement as possible, and then another 6 weeks putting no weight on the leg.

The first couple of days he was kept busy with appointments, but then Tuesday night he shared he was not looking forward to Wednesday where he would be all alone with nothing to do for the whole day. Suddenly I thought- that is my dream! All alone, not being able to do any housework.

Have you ever felt like that, that it would be great just for a moment to take a breath and kick back? We all have moments when we can feel overloaded or overwhelmed. Sometimes it's important to remember to stop and take care of yourself so that you too can be able to care for others. It's a bit like the analogy of being on a plane and needing to fix the oxygen mask onto yourself before helping others. A parent recently told me it had taken her a year and a half to go get her hand sorted out, that had needed operating on, because she was too busy taking care of the family first.

Be kind to yourselves. And it is ok to have time along the way, for reflection and revitalisation. It may be time to get better from a cold, or time to actually go to the dentist or something else you have been meaning to do.

These school holidays spend family time, spend time with the kids and see if you can juggle some time to BE YOU. I look forward to hearing how you spent that time.

Many Blessings

Class in Focus – Kinder B Echidnas

Snug Primary has had a whole school focus on writing this year. In the Early Years writing development begins as oral language skills, shared drawing and shared writing. The Kinder Echidnas took their amazing Bush Kinder experiences and have written a big book together. We shared our big book with parents on the Kinder open morning.

Recent Recipes

On Wednesday 20th September and Thursday 21st September our kitchen and garden areas were used by the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation for a training event. Excitingly our very own Kitchen Garden Specialists, Dearne and Dave, were the facilitators! Our program has been running for over a decade and provides our students with the life-long skills of planting, harvesting and food preparation. Many other Tasmanian schools want to implement this program and we were pleased to share what we have learned.
