Principal’s Report

This week we have been celebrating NAIDOC week with many activities for our students.

The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

We have listened to the stories of Billy Bowman, learned historical information from Aunty Trish and heard Dwayne Everett-Smith’s songs as our bell music. We have explored the palawa-kani language of Tasmania Aboriginal people and created some dances showing stories we have heard.

On Thursday we also had our official playground opening with local community friends. It has been wonderful to see our new equipment used after school and on the weekends. We look forward to planning the next stages of further developing our play spaces for students.

A reminder to our families for Snug students to not be on the school site before 8:30am as there is no supervision. We have students from several high schools and other local primary schools catching connecting buses and we ensure they have left the ground by 8:30am.

As this is the last newsletter for the term, I wish you all a happy and safe break and we will see students back on TUESDAY 25th July.

Kath’s Spot

We celebrate that each of our children are unique, however I often find myself as a parent thinking 'If only I could use the same techniques as I did with the last'. We spend all this time working out how to work best with one child, and then the next child reaches that same age, and they seem to be a totally different package. It’s like they are from a different moulding again. Then you take all the time to work out what works best for that child and the next is different again!

That's half the battle isn't it, realising that they are all different and are unique and special just the way they are. It just can be hard work as a parent sometimes, to find a great solution. But I want to encourage you to keep chugging along to find those little steps forward. There is light along the journey, sometimes it just looks a little dimmer along the way. Yell out if you need help with suggestions, or tips. Remember it really does take a Community to raise a child. And why slog away if someone else has done some of the hard work for us and found some solutions!!

As this term comes closer to the end, everyone is a little more tired than usual and we are all looking forward to a break, so try not to take things personally, as your child yells something at you, or as they go against what you had wanted them to do. Just take a deep breath, and remind them of what you are calling them to do- Chin up you warriors!!

By the way, my family has almost completed our family story, so I will put it in the foyer and I will look forward to seeing some other family stories join it over the next few weeks. Perhaps a holiday thing to do together?

Many Blessings

Class in Focus – “2B Celebrating Aboriginal Culture”

In 2B we have enjoyed exploring the theme of “Our languages matter” in our celebration of Aboriginal culture during NAIDOC week.

In lutruwita (Tasmania) there are place names are in palawa kani, the revived language of Tasmanian Aborigines. These include kunanyi/Mt Wellington, larapuna/Bay of Fires, Eddystone Point, putalina/Oyster Cove and tayaritja/the Bass Strait Islands.

We have enjoyed learning and singing the song milaythina, which celebrates the Tasmanian Aboriginal people's connection to Country. The music is composed and sung by Dewayne Everettsmith and the words are written by members of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community. It is sung in palawa kani, the Tasmanian Aboriginal language.

We performed the song to our Buddies in Kinder.

milaythina nika milaythina-mana This land is my land
tapilti larapuna, tapilti putalina From Eddystone Point, to Oyster Cove
tapilti kunanyi, tapilti tayaritja From Mount Wellington to the Bass Strait Islands
milaythina nika waranta pakana This land is us blackfellas
waranta palawa, milaythina nika We blackfellas are this land

Aircraft Designs

We were inspired by Kath Doliver’s trip this year to the Uluru region, where she met the artist Rene Kulitja.

Rene’s art uses vibrant colours are inspired by the dramatic landscape surrounding Uluru.

'Yananyi Dreaming', a Qantas Boeing 737-800 aircraft, was designed by the Balarinji art studio using individual motifs painted by Rene.

We enjoyed making our own aircraft designs based on the colours and patterns in the natural landscapes of the Australian desert.
