Principal’s Report
It is a very busy time of the year in schools. We are working hard to support our students in the here and now, but there is always spectre of 2025 hanging over us too!
PAT Testing: Our students have all just completed our annual PAT testing cycle. This is an important time of the year for us as educators – we get to have a look at the progress our students are making against national learning benchmarks, identify our strengths (to replicate them) and also find those pockets where we can continue to better support students.
It has been exciting this year to look at our successes – our approach to teaching reading, which is in a dynamic “shift”, has shown some excellent outcomes. Our commitment is to work as hard as we can to support our students to be their very best.
Classes 2025: Teachers have already been putting together classes for next year, so that we may have clarity about structures, transitions, and anything else that may arise. We had a significant number of parent requests this year, which made the process challenging. Our staff always do our best to consider the needs of ALL students, and rest assured, there is considerable time and care that goes in to placing students each year.
School Association: A big thanks to our school association for running the Trivia Night at the beginning of the term. This raised approximately $6000! The School Association does an amazing job of supporting us as a school, and are always interested in new ideas and input from our community. If you are interested in being part of our School Association in 2025, please let me know – we would love to have your ongoing support.
Trivia Night sponsors: Our Trivia Night was in part such a success due to the contribution of many local, Hobart and State businesses who sponsored prizes for the evening. Because they supported us, could you please support them! Definitely consider all of these businesses for your Christmas shopping this year – it would be wonderful to give back to them for supporting us!
Transitions: It is an important time for our Year 6 students, who are beginning to step in to their high schools as part of their transition process. Most high school orientation weeks are happening from week 7.
Kath’s Spot
Grocery Shopping with toddlers- enough said hey! I remember all those days heading off in the car and briefing our boys along the way, about what we will be getting and what we didn’t need, and how we will act in the shopping centre, and what is appropriate. Despite our discussion along the way, sometimes it didn’t always go to plan. Usually it involved a request for chocolate, or lollies, or something to that effect. Don’t get me wrong, it is fine to request something, but it is more about how you react when the request is denied.
I was so proud when my boys would ask for a treat, and when I had said “not today”, they would move straight on to helping me count out how many apples we needed or passing the bread to put into the trolley. But sometimes it became twenty questions, or someone would get really teary, sad or frustrated.
Our students this week have been learning about the value of Acceptance, particularly focussing on accepting things will not always go our way, and building resilience in these moments. Sometimes we need to have a whole bucket of tools to use in these moments when it can be challenging or frustrating. But knowing what helps us, whether it is to step away, to move on quickly, to breathe, to remind ourselves of the benefits of others getting a chance or the like, these strategies can help us to get back into the green zone, and be ready to work or learn.
I know for myself, I try to use the habit of stopping, breathing in and out and not responding until after 4 seconds. Just that moment of pausing can often be the difference between responding appropriately, or not. Maybe take a moment to think about what works for you in those moments when things are not going our way, or according to our plan. Have a think about what would help you in these moments, in order to accept the situation and focus on building resilience. Having a plan in place, with some great strategies, will help you to have a ‘Win’ in the moment. It is too hard in the moment, when feelings and emotions are invested, to try to work out strategies when everyone is heightened. “Failing to plan is planning to fail”.
Class in Focus – Kinder B, Mrs Martyn
Kinder B children read the story “Rose meets Mr. Wintergarten” as we focussed on the Snug CARES value of ‘Community’. We think that by showing kindness and caring for others we can make a difference in our community, just like Rose!
