Principal’s Report
Hi Parents and Families,
As you are all aware, Sug Primary School is a place where our values are central to who we are. We are a community school that prides itself on our relationships – students with students, students and teachers, and how we all interact with you, our parent body and the broader community.
I thought today’s newsletter would be a good opportunity to share with you all the values that underpin our work here:
Department Strategic Plan
The Department of Children and Young People worked extensively over the last few years to develop a strategic plan to guide the work of education in Tasmania. Within this plan, the department has laid our five core values to underpin our work:
Courage – Accepting challenges and embracing opportunities
Growth – Aspiring to learn, and improving, even when its tough
Respect – caring for ourselves, each other, and our environment
Responsibility – stepping up and doing what is right
Connection – Building positive relationships and a sense of belonging.
Alongside these department values, we have, for a long time, had our own – our Snug CARES. These fit neatly alongside our department values, and support the explicit teaching of social schools, the lens through we have restorative conversations, the conversations we have to encourage, support and celebrate our learning and achievement. Our Snug CARES acronym stands for:
Community
Acceptance
Respect
Excellence
Safety.
We will be sharing more with you about our Snug CARES values this year. Watch this space.
Additionally, it is also important to understand our Snug Mission – To inspire and empower a community of learners.
This mission as crafted by all stakeholders over the past six months, and represents an overarching guiding principle to inform the work here – we understand the importance of making learning accessible to all, that we are responsible for facilitating learning, and that we are all learners within this community.
Kind regards
Kath’s Spot
Term 2 has begun, and it is so wonderful to see everyone back and to hear the happy shrills of connecting with friends.
During school holidays I was fortunate to spend my time visiting an the island of Bohol, Philippines in order to make up 109 health and sanitary kits and 100 food kids and then be able to travel across the island with local friends, and head out into communities to be able to distribute them. We helped with kids clubs and basketball groups and spent time visiting individual homes in the communities. It certainly was impactful and such a gift to me to help provide for others.
One of my highlights was being able to teach a group of little people how to play “What’s the Time Tassie Devil”… (a take off of ‘What’s the time, Mr Wolf’) - the laughter and joy certainly filled my cup to overflowing.
Over the years we have tried to help create moments when our boys have had the opportunity to learn about a different culture and the world of another, to help learn empathy for others. It also helps them to appreciate what they have, and often the privileges that they are fortunate to be able to receive each day.
My trip away was certainly a blessing for me, and it helped to reinforce the habit of the mind that our students have been working on, that each of us should show respect to everyone by always thinking about the feelings of others.
Each of us can make a difference right here in our own backyard. Let’s try to stop in the moment (as hard as it is sometimes), pause before we respond and just think about the feelings of others. That pause alone, can significantly change the outcome of the conversation and the ongoing relationship.

EdSmart Communication System
Our School will be receiving a new messaging platform for communicating with you. This will ‘go live’ for Snug Primary School during April/May.
The new platform, called EdSmart is an Australian platform which is designed to improve communication in school communities by allowing electronic messaging i.e. SMS and emails. For now, it will be used to manage absences messages i.e. you will receive a SMS or email alert if your child is absent from school requesting a response. It will also allow us to send a communication message to all parent/guardians.
The platform will, over time, be rolled out across all Tasmanian Government Schools and new features will be added.
